You can find no better place to study Women's Issues than at the "birthplace of women's rights." Rochester was home to Susan B. Anthony, tireless promoter of women's suffrage. A short day trip will take the visitor to Seneca Falls, NY, the home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Also in Seneca Falls is the Womens Rights National Historical Park which commemorates the First Women's Rights Convention and honors the early leaders of the women's rights movement. In addition in Seneca Falls is the National Women's Hall of Fame which honors and celebrates the achievements of American women. Special events are held throughout the year. The homes of Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman can also be visited during the Seneca Falls trip. We have numerous contacts in business, industry, education and government including Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and Monroe County Clerk Maggie Brooks-Lynd, two members of RIC's honorary Board, who have been very supportive of our efforts. Organizations which have cooperated with RIC in the area of women's interests are: Susan B. Anthony House. Susan B. Anthony lived in Rochester for 40 of her most politically active years. Anthony's house is now a museum filled with an historic collection of women's suffrage in the USA. The Susan B. Anthony University Center at the University of Rochester collaborates with community and campus groups and sponsors programs about women in education, public policy, health care, business and athletics. Wilson Commencement Park, a cooperative venture between the private and public sectors, provides on-site transitional services, training, education, and housing for women and children as they move out of poverty. The League of Women Voters is an active organization interested in working jointly with RIC in projects such as a luncheon and discussion which brought over 200 members of the community together with a group of African women who were visiting Rochester. Rochester Women's Network is a member organization of over 800 professional women involved in fostering the growth and advancement of women in the workplace. Their special interest groups include: Beijing Women, Sisters of Interaction Linkage and Knowledge, home based business owners, and Women Business Owners and Entrepreneurs. Sojourner House serves women in transition from abusive situations to healthier lives, and provides housing for women and children. Other resources
include: Women's Health Source, Planned
Parenthood, the Legal Aid Society,
and Upstate Law Project.
