The Arts

Rochester New York is a leading national community in almost all areas of the arts. RIC has access to a network of contacts for individual visitors and groups in our numerous museums, schools and organizations. Rochester’s cultural institutions include:

Museums
Opened in 1949, the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film displays the art, technology and impact of photography and motion pictures over 150 years. Its archives and research center offer the oldest and largest film and photography collections in the United States. The museum also interprets the life of George Eastman, an influential industrialist and philanthropist.

The Strong Museum offers world-renowned collections of 19th-century urban American life - toys, miniatures, dollhouses, home furnishings and dolls. A leader in applying technology to its collections, it also boasts an innovative children’s museum with interactive learning environments and creative educational programs.

Genesee Country Village and Museum is a recreated village of over 50 historically and architecturally significant structures - the third largest such village in the United States. Visitors experience 19th-century country life, with emphasis on crafts, trades, government and religion.

The Rochester Museum and Science Center - made up of a museum, planetarium, school and nature center - enables visitors to explore science and technology, the natural environment and the region’s cultural heritage.

One of the few university-affiliated art museums in the country that serves as a community art museum, the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester offers a panoramic view of the world’s art. Its permanent collection of more than 10,000 objects is the best balanced in the state outside New York City.

Arts Education

Rochester Institute of Technology has an international reputation for its School of Photographic Arts and Sciences, School of American Crafts, School of Art and Design, College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, and School of Printing. It is also the home of the Image Permanence Institute.

Established in 1921 by George Eastman, the Eastman School of Music has achieved international prominence for its undergraduate and graduate studies in all aspects of music. The school’s community education division has just announced the Eastman-Rochester partnership, designed to build a new model of urban music education.

Other resources include the Rochester City School district’s School of the Arts and the Penfield School District, which has won awards for its music education programs and performance opportunities.

Symphony Orchestras

Rochester is home to a world-class symphony orchestra. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra presents live symphonic music, with a variety of classical, pops, and family concerts.

Roberts Wesleyan Community Orchestra features local performances of classical music.

Theatre


Rochester’s premier professional theatre is GEVA Theatre, producing American drama, comedies, musicals and world premieres.

Blackfriars Theatre is in its 49th season and offers high-quality theatrical productions. Its new home is a renovated historical theatre in Rochester’s East End cultural district.

Dance

Garth Fagan Dance is based in Rochester, but has travelled the world over. The company’s founder , Garth Fagan, is probably best known for his choreography of the Broadway version of Disney’s The Lion King. Initially influenced by African-Caribbean dance, Fagan developed his own post-modern, gravity-defying style. The company has been in existence since 1973.

The State University of New York at Brockport has an excellent dance department, with several small performance companies based at the school.

Other local dance companies include Borinquen Dance (Puerto Rican dance), Elizabeth Clark Dancers (modern), the Rochester City Ballet (classical), Sankofa (African-Brazilian) and Xalat (West African).

Community Education/Organizations

Writers and Books fosters and promotes the creation, understanding and appreciation of reading and writing. Its current programs include readings, performances and residencies, as well as community education and outreach. In addition, Writers and Books offers exhibitions and internships.

Artists of all disciplines share their knowledge and experience with people who have special needs through the work of Arts Reach.

Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester develops, promotes and strengthens the arts for the benefit of the local community. The organization is involved in a number of educational and community development programs. It also creates opportunities for artists to serve as community resources.

Located on a 350-acre working farm south of the city, the Rochester Folk Art Guild is a self-sustaining artists’ community that has gained a reputation for fine quality craftsmanship and community life. The Guild offers apprenticeships to craftspeople who join the community. It has received national recognition for its work in pottery, woodworking, weaving, glassblowing, graphic arts, clothing design and basketmaking.

The Visual Studies Workshop is an internationally recognized center for media studies, including photography, visual books, electronic imaging, independent video and film, and media criticism. It offers a number of programs for artists, as well as community education.

The Storytelling Guild of Rochester promotes and preserves the folk art of storytelling through the listening to and telling of stories. The Guild achieves this through performances for all age groups throughout the community.
