City Newspaper is a weekly, free publication for residents of Rochester which focuses on the benefits of city life. Messenger Post Newspapers produces weekly newspapers for eight suburbs. These three- to four-section publications provide comprehensive local coverage of interest to people in the towns surrounding Rochester. In addition, the Rochester area is served by several free, weekly publications which contain extensive advertising. RIC has well established contacts within all of these newspapers, including editors and reporters. Radio Rochester has a large number of radio stations, some independently owned and operated and some owned by national conglomerates, which appeal to diverse audiences. Managers, producers and on-air personalities are always willing to meet with international visitors. "Talk Radio", from the informative to the controversial, is as popular in Rochester as the rest of the nation. One local host, known for his on-air abrasiveness, is gracious and softspoken in person, providing insight into the crossover from news to entertainment in the talk-radio format. Television ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and PBS are represented in the Rochester area, as well as two independent, low-power stations. The city and suburbs have information channels for residents. Time Warner Cable produces a local 24-hour news show and has several public access channels. Certain public access programs have offended the community, local government and Time Warner Cable, resulting in local hearings and lawsuits, as attempts are made to create guidelines to protect the community, as well as the rights of the producers of the programs in question. Rochester
television has a number of locally produced, award winning programs
on commercial stations, including programming for children, investigative
reporting and a program showcasing diversity and cultural differences.
